It seems that the farther along we get on the road to SDx, the more pertinent question is, what role will white box play in an increasingly distributed network environment? To be sure, white box hardware will see a dramatic rise in web-facing hyperscale operations in the years to come, but the advantages the technology brings to the table start to erode as scale drops. This means the traditional enterprise facility, which still has a vital role to play in the emerging data ecosystem, won’t benefit as much from the conversion to commodity solutions.

EdTech: Colleges Move to Software-Defined Data Centers

On the plains of Canyon, Texas, West Texas A&M University plans to deploy a software-defined data center (SDDC), recognizing that it will take a few years to reach that goal. CIO James Webb says West Texas A&M deployed server virtualization in 2008 and today runs 250 VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines across 10 physical servers. “We’ve built a virtualized private cloud to support the growth of the campus,” Webb says. “It has given us the ability to scale and be more agile, providing IT resources and the ability to spin up academic services, such as online courses.”

Ty Rollin, CTO of the mobile technology company Mobiquity, takes a look at some of the issues CIOs and CTOs will be facing going forward. 1. Change Management: “Change management is becoming a block to agile business,” Rollin warns. “It is preventing the adoption of faster, better business processes.” The problem, he says, is that the speed of technological change is way beyond the control of corporate IT departments or tech leaders. “The depth of change is being highlighted by hackers,” he adds. “For instance, Heartbleed and other malware show that not changing and not actively testing your own systems means you will get hacked.”

If there ever was a day in the ICT market where purely technical discussions drove the evolution of technology and standards, they’ve long since passed. The original idea of software-defined networking was that routing traffic based simply on a determination of the lowest-cost path ignored all sorts of interesting possibilities.
