Plexxi Pulse — VMworld 2014 is Right Around the Corner

We’re a few short days away from VMworld’s return to the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Our team will be in booth 747 (hence the jumbo-jet below),  to demo our products and answer any questions you might have about our products – including the new datacenter transport fabric and Big Data fabric. Stop by the booth or send us a tweet to @PlexxiInc and we’ll catch up for a quick chat.

You never know exactly what to expect at VMworld, but our own Mike Bushong took a few educated guesses this week on the Plexxi blog. We’ll revisit his thoughts after the conference to see where he hit (and missed) the mark. Below, is our PlexxiTube video of the week along with our top read from ZDNet. Enjoy!

In this week’s PlexxiTube of the week, Dan Backman explains whether Plexxi’s datacenter transport fabric replaces optical transport gear.

Telstra taps Ericsson for software-defined networking

Josh Taylor reported in ZDNet this week that Telstra is planning to explore software defined networking and network function virtualization in a renewed deal with Ericsson. According to Taylor, Telstra plans to use SDN to manage traffic on its fixed and mobile networks. It will be interesting to see how some of the technologies in transport are applied to the datacenter in this situation. Optical transport – and WDM in particular – can be effectively used to create what looks like carrier Ethernet within the datacenter. Some of the same benefits (high capacity, low latency, programmability) can be applied in different contexts—and it may change what end-to-end really means.
